Optoelectronics is a branch of electronics dealing with the use of optical and electrical methods for processing, storing and transmitting information [1] [2]. His subject area covers the theoretical study of the interaction of electromagnetic fields in the optical range (frequencies 3 × 1011 - 3 × 1017 Hz or wavelengths 1 nm - 1 mm) with electrons in solids and other substances. In addition, optoelectronics includes the applied principles of creating optoelectronic devices that operate on the basis of this theoretical foundation. Their defining feature is the joint use of electronic and optical signals as information carriers, as well as the conversion of optical and electrical energy into each other.
Classification of devices by purpose:
- To convert light into electric current - photoresistors (photoresistors), photodiodes (pin, avalanche), phototransistors, photothyristors, pyroelectric receivers, charge-coupled devices (CCD), photomultiplier tubes (PMT).
- To convert current into light radiation - various kinds of incandescent lamps, electroluminescent indicators, semiconductor LEDs and lasers (gas, solid-state, semiconductor).
- For the isolation of electrical circuits (sequential conversion "current-light-current") are separate optoelectronic devices - optocouplers - resistor, diode, transistor, thyristor, optocouplers on single-junction phototransistors and optocouplers with an open optical channel.
- For use in various electronic devices, optoelectronic integrated circuits are used - integrated microcircuits in which optical communication is carried out between individual nodes or components in order to isolate them from each other (galvanic isolation).
